Can I use my card abroad?

scheduleUpdated 18 days ago

Yes! You can use your Zopa debit card globally, wherever Visa is accepted. Every purchase is automatically converted to British pounds at the daily Visa exchange rate, with no added fees.

What exchange rate is used when spending in foreign currencies?

Payments you make on your card in a foreign currency will be converted to pound sterling using the Visa exchange rate. This changes daily, but you can keep track of things here. We don’t add any additional charges.

Sometimes you’ll be asked which currency you want to pay in. We always recommend selecting the local currency to avoid unnecessary exchange rates. For example, if you’re in Spain, you should choose to pay in euros rather than pounds.

What fees apply when withdrawing money abroad?

You can also withdraw up to £200 in cash while abroad in a 30-day rolling period fee-free. For anything over £200, a 2% fee will be applied.

This is the case whether you take out one cash withdrawal for over £200 or multiple cash withdrawals over the 30-day period which add up to more than £200.

For example:

If, over a 30-day period, you make the following withdrawals:

  1. £220

  2. £50

  3. £50

You’ll therefore have withdrawn a total of £120 over the fee-free amount. For this, you’ll pay a total fee of £2.40, which is 2% of £120.

This will be charged per transaction, so that’s:

  1. 2% of £20, equalling £0.40

  2. 2% of £50, equalling £1.00

  3. 2% of £50, equalling £1.00

Note: the fee will be taken from your Zopa bank account, typically 1 or 2 business days after you make a cash withdrawal that puts you over the £200 total.

How rolling limits work

This is calculated based on your withdrawals over a period of 30 days. Your limit resets 30 days after each transaction, not at a fixed time each month.
