How we compare bank accounts+–
Rates on this page are checked and updated monthly by the Zopa editorial team. All figures are sourced directly from each bank's published rates pages.
We compare standard, fee-free personal accounts from the four largest high street providers and four largest digital banks. We chose them using publicly reported customer numbers to give a broad view of the market. Providers count customers in different ways, so this is not an exact market-share ranking.
We check each provider’s website and account terms for the monthly account fee, foreign-currency card-purchase fee, and fee-free cash-withdrawal allowance abroad. Figures were checked on 26 September 2026.
“Fee-free” means no charge from the bank for that feature. Cash machines abroad may charge their own fee, and charges can apply once an allowance is used. Terms can change, so always check the provider’s latest information before opening an account. This comparison is for general information, not advice.

Tips for spending abroad with Biscuit
Pay by card wherever you can. Every purchase is fee-free and converts at the Visa rate, so you'll save your £200 cash allowance for when you really need it.
Choose the local currency – not pounds. That way, Visa sets the exchange rate, not the merchant. You’ll avoid paying more unnecessarily.
If you lose your card, freeze it instantly and order a replacement through the Zopa app.
