What’s the government debt respite scheme?
Updated 9 months ago
The debt respite scheme, also known as Breathing Space, is a government programme designed to give you the time and space to find a solution for tackling your debt. The scheme can provide up to 60 days of protection during which all interest, fees and charges will be frozen and your creditors won’t be able to contact you to request payment. It’s important to note:
During a Breathing Space, you’ll still be expected to make any contractual repayments that are due
Any missed payments will be reported to credit reference agencies
To apply, you’ll need to talk to a debt advisor. They can then submit an application on your behalf
